When you want to convince someone, or when you want this person to do you a favor, you can use an exhortative sentence (which often starts with words like: Va! (Come on) or Sisplau! (Please). For example, Núria want to go to the cinema with Maria and she asks her so. Maria answers that she has a lot of work to do and that she can’t join her. Núria knows that Maria can postpone her work and try to convince her.

Núria: Va, vine...

How does it sound? Listen and watch.

Listen again to the sentence you have just heard. Listen to the melody of the sentence: the voice tone falls in the last stressed syllable of the sequence (vi-) and then rises and falls again in the last syllable (-ne).

Now listen to the sentence as many times as you want and pay attention to the graphic. Watch (and listen) how the voice falls in the last stressed syllable of the sequence (-vi) then rises and falls again in the last syllable (-ne).

Train yourself.

Now, pronounce a sentence with the same exhortative intonation. Imagine that you are speaking with a friend. You want him to come to the cinema with you. You have asked him plenty of times before and he always said no. Now you ask him again and say: “Va…Vine al cine…” (Come on… Come to the cinema…). After practicing, listen how it is pronounced.

Imagine that you and your brother are travelling by train, and it is a long journey. You are really bored and you see that your brother is having more fun than you because he is listening to music through some headphones. Ask him, "Please ... let me listen to some music…". After saying this, listen to how it is pronounced.
Now, imagine that you are speaking with your flat mate. You have to clean your computer and you need to borrow his external disc to copy the files you don’t want to erase. He says that he doesn’t want to let it to you, but you know that you can convince him. Tell him: “Va... Deixa’m el disc...” (Come on…let me the disc…). After practicing, listen how it is pronounced.

Imagine that you love comics. There is a colleague at work who you don’t know much and who just bought one. You really want to read it, but he is not prepared to let you borrow it. You try to convince him by asking him to lend it to you.
